Additional Thoughts on E-Books
Kevin Rose has a great video on his blog here sharing his thoughts on how to take e-books to the next level. Watch it here.
As an avid e-book reader myself (both on Kindle & iPad) I have to agree with Kevin on all his points. Of course not all e-books have to implement these interactive features but some books seem just made for them.
One feature I would like to see implemented myself is the ability to tag highlighted sentences/paragraphs. In the same way is use openmeta on my Mac to tag files for quick categorization and finding, I would love to do the same across all my e-books. For example when I’m reading Linchpin by the great Seth Godin, I would love to tag certain sentences “marketing” or “customer service”. I could then use the same tags on other e-books I’m reading like 4 Hour Work Week or Paradox of Choice and once finished them, I could do a search across all the books and see the best advice each author gives on each tag.
Now of course I wouldn’t imagine this ever working across all e-book software like ibooks, kindle, or kobo because that would be waaay to convenient for the customer and might help push more people to e-books, but I believe its something each company could implement inside their platform. Overall I think these features will inevitably make there way into the e-book experience.
Lets hope it’s sooner rather than later.
